This photomicrograph features the axon initial segment of the human brain. Synapses colored green and dendrites colored yellow surround the axon (light red). The secretory pathway (dark red) is apparitional and transports cargo from the soma to the synaptic bouton inside the axon. An ultra-thin section (approximately 1 micron) of human biopsy tissue was processed for this investigation using a transmission electron microscope.
