Bar-coded Honeybee on Honeycomb, 1988

Photomacrograph

Arizona Health Sciences Center, Division of Biomedical Communications, The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, United States

A miniaturized bar code affixed to the back of this honeybee was scanned with a laser bar code reader in order to track how frequently the bee left and returned to the hive. Additional information was also gathered relative to the duration of these trips. This photograph required a long exposure of approximately 10 seconds at f/22, during which a tungsten-balanced macro light was used to briefly illuminate the honeybee and comb. The bee's environment was pre-cooled to allow positioning of the bee in the photographic setup. Care was taken to allow the environment to warm up prior to the moment of flight, thus preserving the bee1s natural appearance.
