Epilepsy Procedure, 2000

Close-up photograph; color transparency film; electronic flash

Prince of Wales Hospital, Medical Illustration Unit, Randwick, Australia

This photograph documents the surgical procedure of placing intracranial electrodes on the surface of an epilepsy patient's brain. The electrode grid shown here records brain functions and aids in localizing the source of the patient's seizures. Surgical photography poses various challenges because of concerns for a sterile field and the exposure to infection. In neurosurgery the risk of infection is significantly heightened and the making of surgical photographs often requires additional precautions.
