Scientific Illustration; flatbed scan of enlarged film image
Harvard University, Initiative in Innovative Computing, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States
This image is a representation of carbon nanotubes. Although not an image of actual nanotubules, it has provided insightful and valuable information used to describe the physical structure and organization of nanotubes. This image was created by the manipulation of an image produced from a flatbed scanner. Initially, a black hexagonal pattern representing a standard carbon lattice was printed on an 8 × 10 inch piece of transparent acetate which was rolled into a tube and oriented in a way that the object would be organized. This film tube was then scanned using the flatbed scanner at a very high resolution and tonal scale.
