Project History
During the summer of 2001, the idea to produce an exhibition that featured images of scientific photography was suggested. The goal of that exhibition was to showcase work produced by photographer/scientists who worked mostly out of sight of the general public. At the time, digital photography was rapidly displacing film technology as the major imaging technology used in science and the Internet had become - seemingly overnight – the principal communications tool for many. Additionally Professors Davidhazy and Peres were both personally interested in explorations of the interface of the arts and sciences and they were aware of several initiatives such as the Nikon Small World exhibition where science images were being shown principally for aesthetic reasons. Starting only with their idea, they proceeded to create the exhibition using experimental methods to overcome the obstacles they encountered along way. After 18 months which included the production of a 4-color catalogue, The Images from Science exhibition opened in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery at the Rochester Institute of Technology October 12, 2002. It was displayed at RIT until December 1st of that same year. Following that opening, the Exhibition was displayed in 23 other venues spanning 5 countries and 10 states here in the US. In June of 2008, the show was retired. Below is the complete list of where the Images from Science exhibition was displayed during that time.
