Wing of a Mosquito, 2018

Colored scanning electron photomicrograph
FEI Quanta 250 scanning electron microscope; capture magnification ~x1000; digital colorization

Eye of Science

The picture shows a wing of a mosquito, revealing fine scales on its veins and edges. It is thought the scales reduce the noise of the wings in flight. In this image the signals of a secondary electron detector and two backscattered electron detectors were mixed, and the scales were separately colored.
