The small brown structure in the center of this picture is an artifact that was accidentally included in this prepared butterfly wing slide specimen. I found it to be an interesting focal point for the photograph as it contrasted with the wing's iridescent scales. After trying several different lighting techniques, darkfield illumination provided the most dramatic effect. The image was made during a photomicrography course in RIT's department of Biomedical Photographic Communications.
