Scanning electron photomicrograph; magnification approximately x120 at capture
Nanoscale Engineering Science and Technology Laboratory (NEST), University of Dayton Research Institute, Dayton, Ohio, United States
TThe sample in this photograph was prepared for photography using critical point drying, which was followed by sputter coating using gold to provide electrical conduction. For samples to be evaluated in SEM, they cannot contain any moisture and their surfaces must reflect electrons. After dehydration, sputter coating creates a reflective and conductive surface. This image was created as part of student training on a high-resolution scanning electron microscope (HRSEM) for a graduate biology course taught at the University of Dayton. In the photograph, the compound eyes, antennae and mouth-parts are visible.
