This photograph was made on the remote Gabo Island off the coast of Southern Australia on the border of Victoria and New South Wales. Gabo Island has a pristine marine environment. It is occupied only by its lighthouse, which is used to monitor weather patterns. The Gabo jelly is a bell type of unknown species. It was quite small and delicate, (about 10 mm across the bell), and illuminated by flashlight to enable focusing. A tethered strobe from the same direction as the flashlight was used to create an inner glow from the jelly substance. Capturing the delicate form of the tentacles was a matter of patience and luck.
